Castles!
We visited: Glamis Castle, Urquhart Castle, Eilean Donan Castle, Dunvegan Castle, Dunnottar Castle, and the Edinburgh Castle.
Time: May – June.
Weather: Perfect! Only rained a handful of days.
Edinburgh Castle in Scotland’s capitol.
Edinburgh Castle is located in the heart of the capitol on top of Castle Hill. A small climb, but full of lots of history. You can also drive up the small hill and get some beautiful panoramic pictures.
Open daily from 9:30am – 5pm. Price for an adult is about $20. There is a cafe and tea room on the grounds of the castle.
Glamis Castle the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth.
You can spend the whole day at Glamis Castle. The history of Glamis Castle is full of mystery and intrigue. Daily admission into the castle and gardens is around $18. Times are 10am – 4:30pm everyday.
The castle is located outside of Dundee, Scotland, which is on the eastern side of Scotland. Glamis is very picturesque; it reminds me of Cinderella’s castle.
Dunnottar Castle located on the Northeast coast, near Aberdeen.
Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress from the 15th century. While we visited, what looked like a pirate ship, was setting sail along the coast. Couldn’t have asked for more!
Open daily from 9am – 5:30pm. Price for an adult is about $9. There is a small walk from the parking area and some steps, but its very easy. No bathrooms nearby or food, so be prepared!
Urquhart Castle in Inverness, on the banks of Loch Ness.
The 13th century Urquhart Castle ruins are located off of Loch Ness. It’s a beautiful scenic drive to the castle. The price for admission is around $15. Times are 9:30am – 5:15pm every day.
This castle is a must see, purely for the location! They also have a cafe onsite. If you get there after hours (like we did), you can still take gorgeous photos.
The most photographed castle in Scotland.
Castle Eilean Donan is located on the West coast of Scotland. Near the Isle of Skye. It has been featured in numerous movies and television.
Opening hours daily are seasonal but the average hours are 10am – 5pm. Price for an adult is around $12. A shop and cafe are located across from the castle. It is truly a magical place to be.
Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye.
Dunvegan Castle is located on the western coast of Scotland on the Isle of Skye. The castle is from the 13th Century and the only castle to be occupied by the same family for 800 years! The drive to the gates is incredible. Several movies have used the mountains as their backdrop.
